Rough Mix in Auckland

Two weeks ago the first Rough Mix began in Auckland, and I got to be a part of it.

Rough Mix is run by Scottish theatre company Magnetic North. Here’s how they describe it:

ROUGH MIX is a paid multi-artform creative lab for early-stage ideas and practice development: a two-week practical opportunity for artists to try out new ideas or new ways of working. It brings together a small core group of experienced artists from different disciplines and gives them time to start developing new projects in a supportive and collaborative atmosphere. The artists work with a group of performers and two early-career artists over a two week period before making a work-in-progress showing at the end. Previous participants have included playwrights, composers, choreographers, visual artists and film-makers.

In 2018, Rough Mix will take place outside Scotland for the first time, in Auckland, New Zealand.  Based at the Basement Theatre, it will run from 28 May-8 June. There will be a sharing of work on Friday 8th June.

The goal is collaboration and exploration, and due to this it became very easy to forge meaningful connections with those involved.

It was also a meeting of worlds for me, the Scottish creative culture intermingling with the New Zealand creative culture, me still stuck somewhere between the two.

And of course my beloved pal Morna Young was here for it as one of the experienced artists.

It was – for me – a roller-coaster in many ways and for many reasons. A time of growth and expansion, humility and vulnerability.

There was a sense of serendipity in this project happening seven months after leaving my Scottish home and returning to New Zealand. It brought up questions and opened up all sorts of conversations for me that I will be exploring for quite some time. It also introduced me to some truly extraordinary practitioners, both experienced & emerging, some whom I knew, some who were new to me.

And of course out of that came the unanticipated though deeply felt gift of true friendships.

Now: the breath afterwards.

Inhale. Exhale. Repeat.
